Harder Than Nails Afro 45s -new mix!

My main man in Ghana, Dankyi-Appah Safo Kennedy aka Ken has lately been spending some time exploring Northern Nigeria. After I got to talk to Albert Jones from the Freedom Family and Geraldo Pino's Heartbeats about the scene in Kano and Kaduna back in the 1970s, I was certain that there had to be records up there. This turned out to be true as Ken just express-mailed me an amazing box of 45s. Of course I couldn't resist but throw together a quick mix using some of these gems... a few boxes with LPs should arrive in a few weeks from now and once they get here, I'm sure another mix will follow shortly.

I'm not listing all tracks. Sorry for being so squirelly but I'm in the process of sourcing some of these tunes for possible re-issue and I don't want people chopping up my mixes and re-posting these tracks individually on YouTube or on one of those lame torrent sites...

Thanks! I do believe your blog has lost some of its cultural and educational value ever since you started posting mixes with a lower sound quality and no playlist, but I respect your new priorities and, most importantly, the music still kicks ass!

Calumbinho, I agree but unfortunately this is the only way tp keep the music from being exploited on torrent sites and I'm also not fond of the idea of providing serato fodder to all those laptop djs out there...

I'm one of those folks who edits your mixes, partially to edit out tunes I don't need and also so I can, yes, play them on my radio show or throw certain tracks on the ipod. However, I also give your blog radio shout outs and buy the vinyl you re-issue. I love being able to announce the actual artist and track title, but keeping them anonymous won't keep me from playing them on the air, or mentioning where I got the music from. However, I definitely appreciate the obsessiveness that's led you to unearth so much good stuff. I've done a bit of record digging in Ghana myself, just before the onslaught of reissues, so I do understand the fascination with all this music.

hello frank I fully understand your point of view and it hapenned to me to take you someone tracks songs on my blog but in general it's just to share your music with fans of the African Soul Music ... . the pieces that you put are very rare and a few songs are reissues .well I do not quite agree with calhambino except on the culture but your music is of very very heavy even and if the quality is average sometimes it's a real pleasure to listen that and your last mix is incredible for me ....very fabulous
ps: I hope that one day you come in france

Points well taken.

Thanx for playing this music out on the radio! I also never had anything against people re-posting mixes or individual tracks as long as they state the source.

Eventually, I will post tracklists for all mixes. There are only 5 out of 35 mixes that are anonymous so I guess this can't be too big of a deal. As far as the quality goes, I have recorded the last few mixes in mono so you get the quality of 320 kbps at 160 kbps which saves me a whole lot of space for hosting the mp3s. These mixes are intended as "previews" and to promote all the (legit) compilations and re-issues out there (not only those which I'm putting out) and of course to make people come down to the club and listen to these records on a serious sound system.

Jacky, I've actually been to Nantes last November. Why not try and make it to the Terraneo festival? That's a one time chance to hear these tunes over a huge PA system... I can hardly wait for this myself.

I'm totally stunned by the musical quality in the Segun Bucknor's "Baby get your thing" (track 4 in this mix). At first or second listen, you think to yourself about how much he owes James Brown, then afterwards, you start thinking how much better he is than James Brown! Guitar and organ are just superlative, added to a superb voice, it's a knock-out track!
