Various Mixes 2008-2012 -MP3-

These are some mixes I put together from 2008 through 2012 to promote my various parties in NYC. I decided to leave these up for you to enjoy. There are many more mixes contained in the various older posts of this blog that were all done while I lived in West Africa from 2005-'08 and first got infected with this amazing music.

00:00 The Clusters -cool mood
04:00 Orch. Poly Rythmo -ou c'est lui ou c'est moi" (unreleased version)
14:36 Evelyn Dance Band led by Orlando Julius -erora miliki

56:01 St. Augustine -kpalanuma
63:20 Orch. le Bida de la Capitale -kenuma

Lately I've been seriously getting into Highlife tunes from Benin City (no relations to Benin the country). Benin City is the capital of Edo state in Southern Nigeria and birthplace of Sir Victor Uwaifo. I hope you will enjoy this music as much as I do. All these songs are really long, I only managed to fit seven of them into this mix that runs well over 1 hour... I don't like to cut tracks short. To me the length of these tracks matches the trance inducing nature of the music.

30:22 Victor Uwaifo -ohue
38:38 Akaba Man -ighie vibie
45:27 Talents of Benin -ovbiokhokho

This is a Nigerian Disco mix I put together to promote my Lagos Disco Inferno Parties. Click on the image for a direct link to the mp3 and get sweaty!

My main man in Ghana, Dankyi-Appah Safo Kennedy aka Ken has recently gone international and been spending some time digging for records in Northern Nigeria. When I got to talk to Albert Jones from the Freedom Family and Geraldo Pino's Heartbeats about the scene in Kano and Kaduna back in the 1970s, I became certain that there have to be records up there. This turned out to be true as Ken just express-mailed me a big box of packed with the most unbelievable Nigerian funk 45s. Of course I couldn't resist but throw together a quick mix using some of these gems... a few boxes with LPs should arrive here at Voodoo Funk headquarters shortly and once they are here, I'm sure another mix will follow up in no time.

I'm not listing all tracks. Sorry for being so squirelly but I'm in the process of sourcing some of these tunes for possible re-issue and I don't want people chopping up my mixes and re-posting these tracks individually on YouTube or on one of those lame torrent sites...

Too much - keep up the amazing tunes, Frank, and good luck in your upcoming gigs - wish I could be there!

Anonymous said...

frank- these are killer mixes, esp. the afro-beat one imo! keep them i just got to buy the voodoo funk t shirt to advertise my favorite website.

calumbinho said...

Wonderful!! But where on earth did you get that Monomono track from? I love that band, but I though their only two albums were "Give the beggar a chance" and "Dawn of awareness"... are there more?? Thanks again.

calumbinho said...

(...but you are aware that these last mixes are in mono, and that sometimes only one of the 2 channels seems to be ripped, right? is that to prevent other dj's from ripping you off? if so, when are you going to reissue these gems in their original stereo form? i'm definitely gonna buy them...)

Frank said...

yeah, I intentionally recorded them in mono, this saves me 50% bandwidth. There should be signal on both channels though.
I don't worry about other djs and people who play out downloaded mp3s aren't dj's but mp3j's... haha.

Many, many, MANY THANKS...
All the best!!!

Hi, Frank! It is amazing how much wonderful and unknown (at least to me) music there is stil out there somewhere. All the mixes are great but the Afro-Rock one I liked best. "What about the beauty of the rainbow" ... or what about the kindness of people who share their rare records. Many thanks!

Mambo C. said...

yiaaaah ! great great mix ... thanx a lot ! heavy serious job !

calumbinho said...

He he, that makes a lot of sense. Still, I wish there's something I could do to convince you to post the mixes back in stereo - it does make a difference when I'm blasting 'em through my speakers at home (and, significanty enough, neighbors don't complain - I just wonder if they miss the stereo mixes as well).
In any event, THANKS SO MUCH to continue to post such amazing music. It really is one of those things that make my life better.

Norm said...

Hi Frank,

Really enjoyed the Afro Beat and Afro Funk mixes (as well as the Nettey Family LP which is currently in regular rotation on my turntable).

Tried to listen to the other three mixes but I keep getting a message that tells me the "link appears to be broken." Hope they're not gone for good and that the links will be fixed soon.

Thanks again for everything you do,

Frank said...

hey Norm,

sorry, I have no idea how this happened but I think libsyn just altered its links on me...

Anyway, it's all fixed now so go ahead and check them all out!

Tha Phunky Doc said...

Thank you for those great gifts!!

I'm justhaving some troubles in downloading Afro Rock, the link seems to be broken..

Frank said...

That's weird, there was a problem yesterday with some of the links but I fixed this. Works for me now and I tried it on another computer as well. Give it another shot and let me know if there's still a problem.

Hi Frank,

Still keeping up the good work, I see! Such a pity, wanted to see you play in Europe but didn't make it... Thanks so much for the great new mixes and I can't wait for the Psychedelic Aliens! I'm loving the video clip so much! Anyway, small question; I can't stop listening to this tune by the Cross River Nationale-guys, where are they from?

Cheers, all the best,

Frank H.

Frank said...

Hi Frank,

I might be back in Europe this November...

The Cross River Nationale are from Nigeria's Cross River State in the very Southeast of the country. This is one of my personal favorites as well. Very deep and unique sounding.

Frank can I marry you? You have the BEST ears! I'm all over your mixes and releases...

Hey don't suppose you have a tracklisting for that Afro Disco mix? And when is Lagos Disco Inferno Vol.2 comin out?

Frank said...

Sorry, I'm already married... and can;t give you a full track list for this mix... but I can at least tell you some of the tunes:

6:10 Mona Finnih "I Love Myself" This track will be out in a few days from now as the 5th release of a series of six 12" Disco Maxis that will later be compiled in CD as Lagos Disco Inferno Vol.2

15:00 Aleke Kanonu "N'Gwode" This is a well established classic, originally recorded in NYC but only released on a small private label in Nigerian.

32:40 Kiki Gyan "24 Hours in a Disco" was recently included on a Kiki Gyan compilation on Soundway Records. Great record, go and get it!

LadyRox said...

Ha, ha, no worries Frank!
Yes already got that Kiki Gyan LP, great album indeed. Thanks for the heads up on those few tracks... Can you tell me will you be releasing Lagos Disco 2 on vinyl also?

Frank said...

If you want vinyl you'll have to get the 12"s. We're putting these out in a limited edition of 1.000 copies and each featuring a 12"x 24" bonus poster. Once these are sold out the 12"s will remain available but without the poster, wearing nothing but our sexy company sleeves...

Pretty nice mixes Frank!!

Could you tell me about new "Afro Disco mix"?
44:00- Track ID ?
Or If "Lagos Disco Inferno Vol.2" will be released, I get it what's song?
