Last Party At Santos

Thursday Dec. 18th has seen the last Voodoo Funk Party for now.

Many thanks go out to Jared & Chris from Big City Records, Ian and Anthony for their tireless and enthusiastic support and to Eilon for taking the pictures!

I'm already on the lookout for a new venue and might start the party again sometime in spring.

You know how clubs are man...they want results asap. You should try http://www.lavagina.com/ over on Ave C. The system is small and you may have to bring in turntables, but they will let your night develop and it's right up their alley. I recently lost my Dub Reggae monthly and I'm about to loose my Raregroove Bi-Weekly...ups and downs ya know. Check out Lava Gina...the vibe is right for what you're doing.

Thanx for your thoughts Osmose, I'll definitely have a look at the place.

I've been following Santos Party House for a while now and haven't yet attended on party you hosted. All due to being a penniless student in NY and biting my wallet but I will try and make it out this Thurs. the 11th.

If it's every Thurs. night as you say, I'll keep my eye out at both Santos newletters and your blog. I have to party to Voodoo Funk soon. Must needed.

great tunes... i'm a big collector of angolan "jazz" (merengue) so i appreciate the collection greatly!

sorry to hear santo's isn't working out... seems a tough gig for niche greatness like this. next time you want to do a night, give me a holler and we'll look at williamsburg.

no problems with "house" music taking over here!

hey frank!
unfortunately the rain held my friend and i back this weekend but we'll make it to the next no matter what, hence it'll be your last gig at santos (which is a bummer).. see you then!! :)

Hey Crystal,

I know, it was really nasty out last Thursday. It was a great party though, as a lot of people did make it despite the rain and the cold. I got you covered for the next one. Same goes for Zane. If you want any more names added, don't hesitate to drop me a mail: frank@voodoofunk.com

It also seems that there might some considderable options as to where to continue the night...

Hey Frank,

Sorry to hear about the Santos night. I'm going to try to make it on Thurs. I have to say that I don't think Santos was the right venue for it; I really think you'd be much better off in Brooklyn where there's more interest in this stuff. Last Christmas I remember hearing the Xmas tree dealers in Williamsburg playing Fela, for Chrissake! Wish I could suggest a venue, I'll have to think a bit more on that. Anyway good luck and keep the faith!

brent said...

just FYI, I've got many friends who've been wanting to make it down but haven't quite yet. putting the night in Brooklyn would make all the difference. I won't dog santos out on yr blog but let's just say it's disappointing but not surprising. they want some underground cred, but when push comes to shove we see what people are all about...

Frank,

Kick ass show, crazy music. I was reminded of Nigeria (where I'm from)
tonight and at a point wanted to call my motherso she can listen to
the tunes lol. But thank you so much for letting my friend and I in.
More people were suppose to come but unfortunately they missed the
great time! If you've been recommended to another venue I'm looking
forward to another night of Voodoo Funk!! Really great to hear my
home's music in America; its about time!!

randomly wondered into that club last night at 3 am. wow! what a great thing you've got going. Too bad you're done at that joint, i must say they've got a killer sound system. Sounds great and feels really great with out being deafening. Oh well. You are welcome to play my loft!

Michael Parker said...

Frank, thank you so much for all of this passionate sharing of great music on the blog and in your DJ night! I had a great time last night and I'm so glad I finally made it to this rarefied dance night! The club was very spacious and comfortable and the bold Voodoo Funk -related posters all over the walls were extremely beautiful and heart-warming. The sound was really good like everyone says, although it was a bit too loud because my ears were ringing when I got home.

The music you spun was pretty killing and really made me want to groove. It was really fun to recognize songs from your blog mixes! My only complaint was that having a bunch of disco tracks back-to-back kind of kills (bludgeons) the groove spirit. It's really fun to have one mixed in here and there though.

Best wishes in your next West African sojourn,
Mike in Philly

Thanx for your thoughts.

Sean & Brent,
I'm going to start looking at places in Brooklyn next week. Santos has actually been really supportive. They didn't really have a choice to not have this new night which will guarantee them the kind of business they need and I wouldn't have wanted to continue doing the night with such a poor turnout although we might have just needed a bit more time. Ironically, the final party last night turned out an amazing crowd. There might even be a possibility to continue the party at Santos on another night and on a monthly basis. At least now I know that there is a large enough crowd out there that likes to get down to this music.

Crystal,
it was great seeing you last night and I'm glad you had a great time.

John,
I wouldn't turn down the offer of playing at a fun loft party...

Michael,
the problem with the volume is that it's impossible to judge from the DJ booth how it sounds on the floor and especially since African records are recorded and pressed with a broad range of volume and sound quality, it's hard to avoid sometimes being too loud. But I have to admitt that I've been guitly of playing music way too loud ever since I was a kid... family, neighbours, my wife, club goers on 3 continents, the list of victims is endless.

I can understand you on the disco issue. I used to be a passionate hater of all things Disco back in my Funk 45 years but have really gotten into the African Disco, probably because it's (at least the stuff I like and play) free of drum machines and feels "organic" and funky. Disco always gets a good response from the crowd so it's easy to overdo things. It's hard to figure out if it's better to build blocks of records with a simular feel and rhythm or to mix things up and putting an emphasis on the diverstity of African sounds. Maybe I should play fewer Disco tracks back to back.

Hi Frank, Marc from Chicago here... Have a good trip to Africa. Do you see yourself in Chicago anytime next year? There's a couple of smaller venues that cater to old school rare Funk sets.

Marc

Frank said...

hey Marc,

I wouldn't mind at all coming back to Chicago sometime next year... hit me with an email if you have anything specific on your mind frank@voodoofunk.com
