Tropical Static and Cuban Funk -MP3-
Here are two mixes from the records I found in N'Zerekore.
The first one, "Tropical Static" includes the finds from Guinea, Mali and Senegal of course heavily focusing on the Guinean side. Funk heads beware: This is not "club music". Big shout ot to Chris Meserve who helped me to appreciate the more traditional side of African music and who therefore deserves all the blame for this one. Sorry about the in parts pretty loud crackle... some of these records got played quite a bit by their original owners.
The second and shorter mix "Cuban Funk" presents you with funkier side of my surprise find of Cuban records of which I still have no idea how they got stranded in the forrst of Gunea.

Hey Frank - thanks sooo much for all four of these wonderful mixes ... and the stories and pics!!!
TROPICAL STATIC seems to get stuck ie stop at 8.99MB of the 89.9MB registered ... I have tried this twice while listening on my WMP ... will try and direct target save and will come back again if that does not work either ... thanks again
Chris A
alas! new entries! and new mixes!
can't wait to check these out...
Cool! Glad to see we're going to get to hear the Cuban stuff, too. I think it's good to get away from the Afrobeat stuff and into other styles now and then, much as I love the funky, fuzzy stuff.
Thank you so much, Tropical Static is incredible! Now if only the sun would come out...
Hi Chris A,
I tried from here and Tropical Static seems to load without a problem, I don't think anyone else is experiencing any problems either?
Bembeya Jazz is wonderful. I'm crazy about this kind of stuff. The whole thing is sunny and full of deep emotions. Thanks Frank
Greg
Hi!
I'm also finding that Tropical Static sticks at the same place Chris A. mentioned.
Thanks for everything.
Shawn
i only got a bit of the tropical static as well. (the fist song is very excellent!)
your blog is dope, by the way.
I heard from a few people who had trouble downloading this one. I don't know what's up but if you try repeatedly it should work.
Sorry...
WOW - thank you - just listened to Cuban Funk. Every single track is KILLER. Absolutely brilliant!
Thank you master of wax dealing.. Every tracks is a pure beauty.
How can cuban people reinvented the funk without any contact from outside?
Just perfect..
You ask how Cuban records ended up in Guinea? Well, Sékou Touré changed his allies often, and Cuban "advisors" stayed in lots of the non-aligned (and, almost needless to mention, in the socialist) African states in the 1960s - 1980s. As it seems, some of these guys had a good taste in music.
I also found out that a lot of Guineans used to study in Cuba and some probably brought back some music. Cubans actually built a road from Kissidougou to Kankan in the 1960s that is still in parts functionable although full of holes... it also appears that there was an importer of Cuban records in Abidjan.
thanks so much frank! all of your mixes are awesome, they help get me through my corporate work day...
you are way cooler than the other frank: http://www.last.fm/music/Frank
Dear, mr Frank!
Many many thanx again from cold country at this time of the year. Not that Cuban funk stuff was my favorite among all other funk plantations, but still its really cool grooves. The only thing I could add to your incredible compilation is the only correction of probably misspelled name of one of the bands. I'm pretty sure that the band which plays track 3d on this really good mix called Irakere. I have one of their LPs rip.
They used to come to Moscow in the late 70's when I was a little kid.)
May be it could add something to your baggage:

All the best!

Thank you, Vladimir. You were right, I had misspelled their name.
best

Greetings and salutations, your site just keeps getting better. On the Cubanfunk in Konakry, as recently as 1997 there were still a group of Cuban musicians that played in a club there. I dont recall the name of the place, but it was up the penninsula, away from the Centre. Part of some kind of cultural exchange programme from the early days of the Revolution, these guys eventuallu married in to the local society and there are probably some of there kids still making music.
